Mt. Vernon Independent Democrats "Our Mission"

“If that body of elected officials are ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. As members of Mt. Vernon Independent Democrats we will demand any fraud of the people be stopped.”

The Mt. Vernon Independent Democrats (MVID) will use innovative grassroots organizing strategies to help candidates break through the political glass ceiling. The MVID will target and mobilize support for all the races (including any important ballot measures) in one coordinated campaign. We also recruit and endorse strong community activist early in their political careers, recognizing that a candidate may have to run more than once to win.

The Mount Vernon Independent Democrats will be the voice for residents of Mt. Vernon in the politics of the Democratic Party. Born from the idea of the need of reform of the usual party boss rule for political gain without gain for the people in Mt. Vernon that includes all ethic groups and economic backgrounds.

As Independent Democrats we will continue to support progressive government and issues, help elect honest and intelligent public officials, and supports deserving and qualified judicial candidates. We serve as a direct conduit to local elected officials, organize forums to introduce prospective candidates to the voters, and then organize support behind our endorsed candidates.

With the MVID dedicated membership, and its network with other grassroots and community organizations, the MVID offers distinct benefits to both the candidates and the causes we support, as well as to the people who contribute to them. This is an organization "For the People and by the People."

Mount Vernon protesters rally for fired police commissioner, blast mayor

Reported by Newsday
Protesters at a Friday rally for fired Mount Vernon Police Commissioner Carl Bell took swipes at Mayor Ernie Davis and accused him of derailing a clean-up of the embattled police department.
Davis fired Bell Tuesday after a heated meeting. The move didn't come as a surprise to observers and the department's rank and file, who said Davis effectively took over management of the Mount Vernon Police Department months ago.
But Davis fired Bell without public discussion or input, and on Friday about a dozen people gathered in front of City Hall to protest Bell's terminatio
"If you have a body of five that is elected by the people, give them some input or just allow them to understand what is going on," Yuhanna Edwards, president of the City Council, told News12.
Davis, who is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation by theFBI and IRS, should not be involved in managing a police department, said Damon Jones of Blacks in Law Enforcement of America.
"Now he says he wants to protect the reputation (of Mount Vernon), but he's the only one that's under criminal investigation, not Bell," Jones told News12. "So maybe he needs to look in the mirror if he wants to protect the reputation of the city."
The FBI and IRS have probed several charities started or managed by Davis, as well as residential properties in four states owned by the mayor, Newsday and News12 reported earlier this month. Davis has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and said he's the target of "lynching" by "evil" federal agents and prosecutors.
Even if Davis was not under investigation, some said, he should not have fired a police commissioner who emphasized community policing and was trying to rehabilitate the department's image. Friday was Bell's last official day as police commissioner, even though he was relieved of management duties Tuesday.
Among Bell's supporters on Friday was Bishop William Ewell of the New Hope Cornerstone Apostolic Church on South Fourth Avenue.
"I don't feel safe here," Ewell said. "Carl was doing the best that he can."
